WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Snowden damaged US national security when he made public a cache of classified documents about the government’s intelligence programs, the report stated.
"Snowden caused tremendous damage to national security, and the vast majority of the documents he stole have nothing to do with programs impacting individual privacy interests — they instead pertain to military, defense and intelligence programs of great interest to America’s adversaries," the report summary stated.
Separate investigations by the intelligence community and US Department of Defense have not determined the full scope of the damage caused by the 1.5 million documents Snowden took, the report noted.
The report characterized Snowden as a serial exaggerator and fabricator who lied about his US Army service record and previous employment at the Central Intelligence Agency. Additionally, it accused him of stealing answers to an NSA employment test and faking performance evaluations.
In 2013, Snowden revealed classified documents to reporters exposing the mass surveillance practices of the US government at home and abroad. Snowden faces espionage and other charges that could land him in prison for up to 30 years.
