WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — "As ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Europe, I write to respectfully urge you to schedule a hearing as soon as possible to consider the foreign policy implications of Russia's reported interference in our upcoming national elections," the letter stated.
Citing reported allegations of Russian-backed cyber intrusions into the Democratic National Committee and state voting systems, Shaheen claimed that Moscow may be seeking to influence the US elections.
Despite public accusations from US politicians, intelligence officials have not provided evidence linking Russia to any of the reported cyberattacks.
Moscow has repeatedly denied accusations of state-sponsored data breaches against US systems as well as any interest in meddling in the internal affairs of the United States.
