Lockheed Martin Wins New Order to Expand US Navy Aegis Fleet - Pentagon

The US defense contractor Lockheed Martin has received a $157.4 million contract for support services for equipping the remaining destroyers and cruisers in the US Navy designed to carry the Aegis missile defense system, the US Department of Defense announced.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The contract will support the installation of the Aegis systems on the remaining destroyers and configured cruisers configured to carry them, the Defense Department noted.

"Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems [of] Moorestown, New Jersey is being awarded a $157.4 million… contract for the follow-on support services… [for] the development and fielding of the Aegis Baseline 9 Weapon System and Integrated… Combat System," the announcement said on Friday.

Work on the contract is expected to be completed by September 2017, it added.

The Defense Department has committed to massive expenditures to deploy Aegis systems both at sea and ashore in Europe. An Aegis Ashore system is online in Romania and another is due to join it in Poland within two years.

Also, four US Navy Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense ships are based at the Spanish base of Rota and deployed across the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea.
