Over 1,000 Rally Against CETA, TTIP Free Trade Deals in Berlin
11:40 GMT 17.09.2016 (Updated: 11:58 GMT 09.02.2023) Over a thousand of Germans turned out on Saturday for a rain-soaked rally in Berlin to protest the EU’s talks on free trade deals with the United States and Canada, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.
BERLIN (Sputnik) — Rallies against the controversial pacts are also planned in Hamburg, Stuttgart, Cologne, Leipzig, Frankfurt, and Munich.
5 September 2016, 15:05 GMT
The organizers, NaturFreunde Deutschlands (Germany’s Friends of Nature), expect hundreds of thousands to attend the rallies nationwide ahead of the next week’s EU ministerial meeting.
The EU’s 27 trade ministers will gather in Slovakia’s Bratislava on September 23. They are expected to negotiate an annex to the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which aims to establish a free trade zone.
A similar deal between the 27-nation bloc and the United States, called the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), was pronounced dead last month by German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel.
