TOKYO (Sputnik) — The Malakas, the 14th typhoon to struck the country in 2016, made landfall in the southern Wakayama Prefecture in the afternoon, the NHK broadcaster said. At least eight people across Japan sustained injures.
More than 680,000 people have been recommended to evacuate, the broadcaster said, adding that over 130 domestic flights were canceled.
According to the authorities of Miyazaki prefecture the typhoon has caused flooding and damage in the area. High winds and heavy rains resulted in power cuts in Kagoshima prefecture, leaving 246,000 people without electricity, the broadcaster added.
