"The Russian side said that we are waiting for written replies to our proposals that were presented at the last meeting of the Russia-NATO Council. Issues were discussed relating to traffic safety in the Baltic region," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Meshkov said after the Wednesday talks.
Stoltenberg said in July that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) welcomed Russia’s proposal to ensure air safety in the Baltics, including through flights with transponders turned on.
"In order for such a meeting [on air safety in the Baltics] to be held, written replies to our written proposals are necessary," Meshkov told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.
In August, Chief of the Main Directorate of International Military Cooperation of the Russian Defense Ministry Sergei Koshelev said that the ministry was closely monitoring the situation with regard to the Russian initiative to hold bilateral consultations with the defense ministries of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Sweden and Finland, which was voiced the Russia-NATO Council meeting in July 2016.
