MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Russian Defense Ministry Board headed by Minister Sergei Shoigu will discuss Wednesday preparations for Russia’s only aircraft-carrying cruiser for active service, the ministry said.
"The board will address the construction of offshore maritime zone warships – precision weapons carriers, preparations for Admiral Kuznetsov heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser’s entry into combat service and completing state tests of the Admiral Flota Gorshkov frigate," the ministry said.
The Admiral Kuznetsov is Russia’s only aircraft-carrying cruiser, sometimes designated by the West as an aircraft carrier, commissioned into the Russian Navy on December 25, 1990.
A Russian defense industry source told RIA Novosti last month the Admiral Kuznetsov was undergoing upgrades before going on assignment to the Mediterranean later this fall.
