ANKARA (Sputnik) — Cavusoglu stressed that both countries were eager to do utmost to develop bilateral economic cooperation.
"The decision of the United Kingdom to withdraw from the European Union saddened Turkey, however, everyone should respect the will of the people. Furthermore, its leaving the bloc may open new dimension in Turkey-UK relations," Cavusoglu said at a joint press conference with UK Foreign Minister Boris Johnson, who is currently visiting Turkey.
"The United Kingdom is one of the few countries, with which we have had a constantly increasing mutual trade turnover since 2009. We want to create a mechanism that will strengthen the development of economic cooperation. Our prime minister [Binali Yildirim] has invited [UK Prime Minister] Theresa May to visit our country. During her visit, we want to hold a business forum with the participation of businesspeople from both countries," the Turkish foreign minister added.
The United Kingdom held a referendum on June 23, where the majority of voters chose to leave the European Union. London has not begun the official exit procedure so far as it still has not triggered Article 50 of the EU Lisbon Treaty.
