Democratic Party presidential candidate Hillary Clinton called on Americans not to listen to her rival Republican nominee Donald Trump during the first nationally televised presidential debate.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Whatever arguments Republican nominee Donald Trump makes in the debate should be ignored because the American people already know the "real Trump," Hillary Clinton said in a Twitter message.

"No matter what Donald says at tonight's debate, we already know the real Trump," Clinton tweeted about an hour before the debate was due to start on Monday night.

Polls have suggested that possibly more than 100 million people will watch the debate, a figure about 20 million more than the previous largest television audience for a US presidential election debate that reached 81 million viewers for Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter in 1980.
