WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — When asked about the Peres’ funeral, the president said that he "would very much like to" attend, and the staff is working "diligently" to see if they can make it happen, Earnest said as quoted by the White House press pool.
US Secretary of State John Kerry said earlier in the day that he hopes to travel to Israel this week to pay respects to Peres.
Peres was the ninth president of Israel, serving in that position from 2007 to 2014. Peres also served twice as the prime minister and twice as the interim prime minister.
Peres and was one of the architects of the 1993 Oslo Accords that helped to sustain peace in the Middle East. In 1994, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts, together with Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
