WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Senate finally advanced the continuing resolution after brokering an agreement with the House of Representatives to ensure $170 million in funding for Flint, Michigan was moved out of the continuing resolution and into a water resources bill, which passed the Senate and is being considered in the House.
"[The continuing resolution] includes important resources to support our veterans, to combat the Zika virus and heroin and prescription opioid crisis, and to serve as a significant down payment for flood relief," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced before the vote.
McConnell added that the continuing resolution "also funds all current government operations through December 9 at last year's enacted levels."
The stopgap spending bill will provide continued funding at 2016 levels and avoid a government shutdown until after the 2016 election season.
The House of Representatives could vote on the continuing resolution as early as Wednesday afternoon, in time to prevent a government shutdown before the end of the fiscal year on Friday, September 30.
