ANKARA (Sputnik) — Turkey expects the United States to respond within days to its request to detain self-exiled Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen that Ankara suspects of organizing the July 15 coup attempt, Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said Wednesday.
"We are actively negotiating with the US on Gulen's extradition. The needed documents have been submitted. As we have been informed by the US, they will respond to our inquiry about Gulen's temporary arrest within one-two days," Bozdag said in an interview with the NTV broadcaster.
Ankara submitted a request to the United States for an urgent arrest of Gulen on September 10.
An attempted military coup took place in Turkey on July 15. It was suppressed the following day. Turkish authorities have accused Gulen of having incited the coup and have demanded his extradition from the United States.
