BEIJING (Sputnik) – China hopes other BRICS member states will promote partnership and reinforce practical cooperation at the upcoming summit in the Indian state of Goa, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Thursday.
"BRICS leaders will hold the eighth meeting in Goa in October. We hope that BRICS countries will firmly adhere to the spirit of openness, tolerance and cooperation, bolster partnership and deepen practical cooperation," Geng said at a press briefing.
BRICS is an important motive force of global economic growth and has great potential for development, the spokesman added. He also called on BRICS members to intensify efforts to achieve global economic growth.
The eighth BRICS summit will kick off in India’s popular touristic site of Goa on October 15-16. India assumed the rotating chairmanship of BRICS from Russia on February 15 and will hold the position till December 31.
BRICS is informal association of five major emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Since 2009, countries have been meeting annually at formal summits, except for South Africa, which has joined the association in 2010.
