Police are currently on the lookout for a man in the Etah district of Uttar Pradesh, who is accused of assaulting his wife with a wooden stick along with other relatives for giving birth to their third female child.
The accused, Harish Chandra, was said to be drunk at time of the incident. After the victim Preeti fell unconscious, she was taken to the hospital by her husband but fearing arrest he left her there alone with her injuries while he himself fled.
The victim's father filed a complaint with the police. A police official told media that on the basis of the written complaint filed by victim's father, they have arrested four men under various sections of Indian Penal Code and are still searching for suspects.
Determining the sex of an unborn child is a crime in India, but according to statistics from UNICEF more than 7,000 cases of female feticides happen daily in India. As per the 2011 census, with 914 girls to 1,000 boys, India has the lowest child sex ratio since 1947.
