MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Afghan National Army (ANA) in collaboration with police launched an offensive to clear Aqtash district of Kunduz province from Taliban militants, local media reported Friday.
"Taliban's strongholds and weapons have been destroyed. Our fight is for peace," Amanullah Mobin, commander of Army Commando told the broadcaster.
Afghanistan is in a state of political and social turmoil, with government forces fighting the continuing Taliban insurgency, while other extremist groups, such as the Daesh group, outlawed in many countries including the United States and Russia, have also expanded their activities both in the country and in neighboring states. The instability has persisted in the country since the 2001 US-led invasion to defeat the Taliban and al Qaeda.
