WASHINGTON (Sputnik), Leandra Bernstein — On Thursday, Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, informing lawmakers that the administration is "actively considering" other options to end the Syrian civil war and start a political transition.
"It is almost like a waste of breath to discuss these things that you know are not real," Corker said on Thursday when asked if the US administration may consider arming Syrian opposition in the wake of the ceasefire collapse.
Blinken also noted that President Barack Obama had called for all government agencies to review US options in Syria, following the collapse of the September 9 ceasefire brokered between the United States and Russia.
"There is no ‘plan B,’ there never has been a ‘plan B,’" Corker said. "This administration is not going to do anything, and I think everybody knows that-Russia knows that, [Syrian President Bashar] Assad knows that."
Progress toward ending the Syrian civil war under the auspices of the International Syria Support Group are nearing collapse, as US Secretary of State John Kerry warned Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday that the United States is prepared to suspend bilateral engagement.
