WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Reports that US negotiators made secret concessions to Iran during talks on its nuclear program jeopardized the United States’ national security, House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan said in a statement on Friday.
Earlier in the day, the Wall Street Journal reported that Washington agreed to support the repeal of United Nations Security Council sanctions on two Iranian banks on the same day in January that Tehran freed US nationals from detention and received $1.7 billion in cash.
"These additional secret concessions directly jeopardize our national security, and cast further doubt on this flimsy agreement," Ryan stated.
Ryan said President Barack Obama needs to explain the concession to the American public.
The media outlet added that UN sanctions had been scheduled to be removed in 2023 under the nuclear deal, which took effect on January 16.
