Pentagon paid $540 million to British PR firm Bell Pottinger in 2007-2011 to make fake terrorist propaganda films in Iraq to track those who watched them, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism said in a report Sunday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the report, the videos shot in the style of al-Qaeda jihadist group were recorded on CDs, which were thrown around by US marines during raids. The videos contained codes which sent a list of IP addresses where they have been played to a tracking account, as explained to the Bureau by Martin Wells, who worked for Bell Pottinger in Iraq in 2006-2008.

The PR firm was also engaged in producing advertisement aimed at showing al-Qaeda in negative light and writing scrips for local Arabic soap operas where key characters would reject terrorism.

Bell Pottinger reported to the Pentagon, the CIA, and the US National Security Council on the project, according to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism.
