WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, local media reported that many parts of Kunduz were overrun by the Taliban. Afghan TOLOnews television network said the insurgents were moving toward the governor’s office.
"We're aware of the reporting, and the situation in Kunduz remains fluid so we continue to develop the situation," Cleveland stated.
The spokesperson noted that the Afghan military is responding to the Taliban activity in the area, while US forces stand ready to provide support.
Afghanistan is in a state of political and social turmoil, with government forces fighting the continuing Taliban insurgency, while the Islamic State terror group, outlawed in Russia, has also expanded its activities both in the country and in neighboring states.
