MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov expressed doubts Monday that it would be possible to send a peacekeeping mission, in particular of the United Nations to Syria.
"It is hard to imagine the possibility of any peacekeepers being sent there," he told a press conference.
According to the official, the conflicting sides to the Syrian crisis may oppose the deployment of the peacekeeping contingent.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition groups, as well as terrorist formations.
In March, Syrian President Bashar Assad said that the deployment of UN peacekeeping forces in Syria would be an illogical and impossible move since it would require an international agreement with terrorist groups.
