BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, a man attacked the police officers with a knife in the Schaerbeek district of Brussels. Media reported that the attacker had been detained, while the life of the policemen was not in danger.
According to the RTBF broadcaster, Brussels' prosecutors started the investigation at first, but then they passed the case to the Belgian Prosecutor's Office that considered that the act of violence could be a terrorist attack.
During the recent years devastating terrorist attacks hit the European countries, including Belgium, prompting EU authorities to increase safety and security and engage in the international fight against terrorism. The largest attack hit the Belgian capital on March 22, when two explosions hit Brussels Airport and the third one occurred at the Maelbeek metro station, claiming lives of more than 30 people and injuring over 300.
