France's former foreign minister Laurent Fabius will go down in history as a man who believed that Assad does not deserve to live and that al-Nusra has done some useful work. It is also possible that just in a few days he could be named as 2016 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

Fabius has been nominated for his role as head of the COP21 Paris climate accord. However, his nomination has been met with mixed feelings.

Gilbert Roger, a Socialist Senator from Seine-Saint-Denis who is close to the government said, “This is recognition of his [Fabius] special contribution, particularly in the climate COP21 Conference. It is, indeed, a real success, it is now clear that the Treaty of Paris was ratified at the international level.”

“He was, I believe, an active ambassador of world peace. I have nothing to blame him for. His activity is crucial in dealing with Iran. He managed to do it,” Roger said.

Djordje Kuzmanovic is national secretary of the Left Party on international issues. Commenting on Fabius’s  nomination, he said, “At first I thought that today is April 1st because Mr Fabius took part in intensifying two wars, in particularly in Ukraine and Syria, where he played quite a disastrous role and that should not allow him to be awarded with a Nobel Peace Prize, which is something very significant,” Kuzmanovic said.

Jérôme Lambert an MP from the Charente department, the Socialist Party said, “I remember the selection of Barack Obama, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Considering the fact that Barack Obama has really served for peace all these years, the Nobel Peace Prize is given for specific actions, which are marked by a person's life.”

He further said that often it is either for a lifetime achievement or just for some main event of one’s life.

“As for Laurent Fabius the role he played in the COP21 allowed to conclude an international agreement, which is important for the future of the planet,” Lambert said.

Christian Hutin is a French politician, member of the French National Assembly and a member of the Civic Party and the Republican movement.

Talking about Fabius, he said, “I believe that it is necessary to award the Nobel Peace Prize to the person who has done something important in their work.”

“Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry are awarded to those who conducted research for ten or fifteen years after a certain time. In my opinion, until now the Nobel Prize was awarded in the context of current events. We are not talking about the peacekeepers in Syria. I do not think we should give the Nobel Prize immediately, it takes time. It does not seem right to award it immediately.”

He further said that with regard to peacekeeping, it was right. “However, with regard to the climate agreement, it is premature. Does peace have anything to do with the environment? Probably yes, but it is still premature,” Hutin said.
