BERLIN (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Schaefer said that the German diplomat and the UN envoy could discuss the peaceful settlement in the Middle Eastern nation in the near future.

"Foreign Minister Sterinmeier will meet today, on Wednesday with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura in German Foreign Ministry. An issue of improvement of humanitarian situation in Syria will be the key issue of the negotiations," the statement said.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces fighting numerous opposition groups, as well as terrorist formations. The international community, including Germany and the United Nations, has undertaken steps to end the Syrian conflict and to solve the humanitarian crisis in the Arab republic.

On Tuesday, the German Foreign Ministry said that representatives of the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, the United States and France, as well as of the European Union would discuss the Syrian conflict in the German capital on Wednesday.
