It's hipsters versus the homeless on the streets of East London, as another cafe appears to forget which part of the city it's in again.

A social media storm has started after a cafe in Bethnal Green, near Shoreditch, was pictured displaying a sign which said: "Please don't feed the crackies."

By "crackies" it can only be assumed the cafe is referring to drug abusers, often referred to as "crackheads," which led to many people interpreting the sign as a direct slight on people who sleep rough in the area and take drugs.

The request, scrawled on a blackboard outside the cafe, prompted outrage and indignation among east London's almond milk latte drinkers with remarks posted on Facebook that it was "disgusting" and "callous" towards people who struggle with drug addictions.

The person who took the photograph, Emily Jane said:

"In other news, hipsters are still d***heads. Charming sign in a part of London where homeless people are just starting to freeze to death at night, eh?"

Emily Jane does have a point. Hipsters have a lot to answer for, including organizing games for rich people to run around council estates and selling expensive breakfast cereal in the poorest borough of London.

The cafe told London newspaper the Standard, that the sign was meant as an "in-joke."

"The sign was not mean to cause offense. It was more of an in-joke than anything else. We are shocked that people conflate heavy drug users with the homeless. That is a gross generalization," a spokesperson for Jonestown cafe said.

However on Twitter, the cafe seemed to take the complaints a little less seriously, posting: "Sorry we offended your sensibilities. Please send your complaint letter to www.GetALife.com Cheers."
