NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which is responsible for maintenance and upkeep of India's Historical buildings and monuments, is planning to use traditional Indian mud therapy to restore the beauty of the Taj Mahal.
The Taj Mahal, situated in Agra, is one of the most famous tourist destinations in India.
As per the officials of ASI, the mud pack of Fuller's Earth, locally known as Multani Mitti, will be applied to the top dome to remove the yellowness from the dome's white marble. The mud pack will absorb the dust, pollutants and other deposits responsible for the discoloration. After that the dome will be washed with distilled water.
However this process of cleaning the Taj Mahal will take a long time to complete and tourists visiting the iconic monument will not have a clear view as scaffolding encircling the dome will be erected. Local tourism agencies fear that this will adversely impact the tourist inflow.
The parliamentary Standing Committee on Environment had spoken out about the yellowing of the marble on the Taj Mahal and had instructed the authorities to take relevant steps to restore the beauty of the monument.
