WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – US Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said she wanted a Supreme Court that would be pro-choice and allow gay marriage, during a debate in St. Louis, Missouri.
"I want a Supreme Court that will stick with Roe v. Wade and the woman’s right to choose, and I want a Supreme Court that will stick with marriage equality," Clinton said Sunday, adding that her Republican rival Donald Trump wanted to abolish abortion rights.
Abortion is legal in the United States under a 1973 ruling of the US Supreme Court, known as Roe v. Wade decision. The United Nations has also reaffirmed reproductive rights as basic human rights.
The Supreme Court has been short-staffed after Justice Antonin Scalia died last February and the Senate did not permit President Barack Obama to nominate a new justice to have a full complement of nine justices.
