"Russia's actions are totally unacceptable. The airstrikes against civilians should be ended. We should make a stand against war crimes, they should be subject to the legal scrutiny. The European Union could consider sanctions against Russia over the war in Syria," Wallstroem told Germany’s Spiegel.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with opposition factions and Islamist terrorist groups fighting the Syrian army. The Russian Aerospace Forces began their operation against terrorists in Syria on September 30, 2015, at the request of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Earlier in October, different European politicians, including Germany's Coordinator for Intersocietal Cooperation with Russia, Central Asia and the Eastern Partnership Countries Gernot Erler brought the idea of introducing restrictions against Russia over its role in the Syrian conflict, which had aggravated in recent weeks.
On Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that there were no reason to introduce sanctions against Moscow over Syria, because Russia was the only country, whose armed forces were in the Middle Eastern nation on a legitimate basis, from the point of view of the international law.
