MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The man, Jaber al-Bakr, had been under round-the-clock surveillance, Spiegel said on Wednesday citing judicial sources. He was suspected of planning a bomb attack on an airport in the German capital.
According to Spiegel, it is not clear how exactly al-Bakr managed to kill himself while in police custody.
Jaber al-Bakr, 22, was arrested early on Monday in an apartment in the eastern German city of Leipzig after he was captured by fellow Syrians who alerted the police.
The Syrian was suspected of having plotted a bombing using some 3.3 pounds of explosives that were found at his Chemnitz home.
The Saxony criminal police chief said on Monday that al-Bakr appeared to be linked to the Daesh terror group, outlawed in multiple countries including Russia.
