The new device is aimed at increasing the performance of the Large Hadron Collider twofold.

NOVOSIBIRSK (Sputnik) — Russian scientists have developed and manufactured an injector that could contribute to more than double increase in productivity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics (BINP) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Science said in a statement Wednesday.

"Adoption of a new injector is planned within the framework of the Large Hadron Collider's modernization, which is expected to increase the performance of the facility more than twofold," the statement read.

The institute added that one of the sections used in the LHC's Linear accelerator 4 (Linac 4), which had been developed by Russian specialists, had already successfully passed tests in the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

The LHC, the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator, was set up in 2008 with the goal of gaining an insight into the mystery of dark matter. It consists of a 27-kilometer (almost 17 miles) ring of superconducting magnets with several accelerating structures increasing the energy of particles, according to the LHC website.
