WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier on Thursday, Newsweek magazine reported that Trump apologized for the US decision to bomb then Yugoslavia — comprised of Serbia and Montenegro — during the 1999 Kosovo War. Newsweek stated that Trump said the bombing of the Serbs was "a big mistake."
"Mr. Trump never gave an interview to the Serbian weekly magazine Nedeljnik as falsely reported by the discredited Newsweek, nor was such an interview conducted through our Indiana State Director," the Miller stated.
However, Trump’s explained that the interview Newsweek reported on was a hoax.
"This was a hoax and we look forward to receiving a formal retraction and apology from all involved," Miller said.
In August, the Serbian Radical Party's deputy secretary general told Sputnik that the party supports Trump because he has offered an apology for the US bombing of Belgrade.
In 1999, NATO conducted a 78-day military campaign against then Yugoslavia, paving the way for Kosovo Albanians to declare independence in 2008. Serbia considers Kosovo to be part of its territory.
