"If no viable solution to safeguard our membership as part of the UK exists, Scotland should prepare for a second independence referendum and seek to remain in Europe as an independent country," the resolution read.
The SNP Congress expressed its disappointment with the fact that the United Kingdom voted for leaving the European Union as a single entity, but stressed that the democratic will of Scotland should be respected.
On June 23, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it. Scotland, which tried its own independence referendum in 2014, backed UK staying in the European Union by 62 to 38 percent.
Shortly after the referendum results were made public, a poll conducted for The Sunday Post revealed that almost 60 percent of Scots would vote for independence from the United Kingdom after Brexit. In September, reports emerged that Scotland was getting ready for a new referendum on the independence from the United Kingdom in 2018.
