The United States approved security assistance to Honduras because it made progress on human rights issues despite ongoing crime and corruption, US Department of State spokesperson Mark Toner said in a briefing on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Friday, Amnesty International reported that Honduras has one of the highest murder rates in the world and called on its government to improve security and address police violence against civilians.

The United States supports the Government of Honduras through its Central America Regional Security Initiative by assisting law enforcement efforts and implementing violence prevention programs, according to the State Department.

“We certified that Honduras has taken effective steps to meet the criteria specified in the fiscal year 2016 appropriation legislation,” Toner stated when asked about the security aid program. “Obviously, corruption, crime and impunity continue to be real problems in Honduras.”

The United States has observed a “demonstration of political will” on the part of the Honduran government to address the country’s security and developmental challenges, Toner claimed.
