MOSCOW (Sputnik) — At least 473 people have died and nearly 1.5 million others remain in need of humanitarian assistance in Haiti as a result of Hurricane Matthew, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) said in a statement.
"Hurricane Matthew, which violently struck parts of Haiti on 4 October, caused the largest humanitarian emergency since the 2010 earthquake. As of 11 October 2016, the Directorate of Civil Protection (CPD) of Haiti had confirmed 473 deaths, 339 injuries and 75 people missing. Nearly 1,410,774 people need humanitarian assistance, including 592,581 children," the statement issued on Thursday said.
Matthew is the most powerful hurricane to form in the Atlantic Ocean since 2007. The hurricane has impacted several countries in the Caribbean and has also skirted the Florida coastline since October 4.
