"I do not know if the sanctions will be discussed there [at the summit]," he told reporters in Berlin.
Earlier in the week, a number of politicians announced their initiative to impose a new round of sanctions on Russia over its actions in Syria.
Moscow and the West have been at loggerheads since Crimea became a part of Russia in 2014 and the West accused Moscow of meddling in the conflict in eastern Ukraine, imposing several rounds of sanctions on Russia.
The European Union's main economic sanctions against Moscow are in place until January 31, 2017, and sanctions against some Russian citizens and legal entities are valid until March 15 of the same year.
The already strained relations between Russia and the West have further deteriorated as Washington along with other members of the US-led anti-terror coalition have blamed Moscow for using its goal to counter jihadists in Syria to cover up other intentions. Moscow has denied the claims, saying that the only aim it pursues in Syria is to eradicate extremists.
