CAIRO (Sputnik) – Yemen was going to host the summit in 2017 on a rotation basis.
“The Yemen’s permanent representative passed to the Arab League’s secretary-general an oral message of the Yemeni Foreign Minister Abdul-Malik Mahlafi with a description of the situation in the republic and a statement that Yemen would not be able to host the 28th Arab summit amid the threats the country faces,” the statement said.
The country has been engulfed in a military conflict between the government headed by Hadi and the Houthi Shia rebels, which are the country’s main opposition force.
Since March 2015, the Saudi-led coalition of mostly Persian Gulf countries has been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthis at Hadi's request.
