New Delhi (Sputnik) – The Indian government certainly did not have this in mind when it started providing free Wi-Fi Internet access at railway stations across India. The government was focusing on providing technology services for convenience of commuters.
Patna Station in Bihar ranked first in terms of using the free WiFi service. According to the Ministry of Railways sources, people at Patna station used free Wi-Fi to search Youtube followed by Wikipedia. However, more than anything, users watched and downloaded porn at the station, followed by Indian and western movies, songs, and entertainment applications. Jaipur Railways Station ranked second in terms of the free internet usage, followed by Bengaluru and Delhi.
RailTel, a public sector undertaking, provides free Wi-Fi internet services at Railways stations in India in collaboration with Google. As of now, 23 railways stations in India have free Wi-Fi access and the Ministry of Railways wants to scale it to 400 stations in next three years.
According to Indian Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu, the usage of digital media will help in developing the country and fast Internet will contribute in the use of tele-medicine, education along with entertainment.
In fact, Indian Railways introduced free Wi-Fi for the proper, smooth and fast dissemination of information, but government authorities have been taken aback by the present internet use statistics.
