WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Northrop Grumman has submitted a proposal to the US Air Force to modernize the United States’ intercontinental ballistic missile system, the defense contractor company said in a press release.

"The ICBM system has been an effective deterrent since its inception,” Carol Erikson, Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems vice president for the Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent program, stated in Monday’s release. “Northrop Grumman has submitted a proposal leveraging our comprehensive ICBM weapons system understanding to deliver a low-risk, adaptable solution within cost and schedule.”

According to the release, the Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent is intended to replace the country’s existing ICBM system, including weapons command and control; flight, launch and ground systems; and cyber elements.

Northrop Grumman has been the systems integrator on every US ICBM weapons system and led the recently completed ICBM Prime Integration Contract.
