Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said Wednesday that Western states and Ukraine blocked Russia's draft statement on separating Syrian rebels and terrorists and the humanitarian pause in Aleppo.

The United Kingdom, the United States, France and Ukraine blocked Russia's draft supporting the 8-hour humanitarian pause in Aleppo and separating Syrian rebels and terrorists, the Russian envoy said.

"Some of our friends have once again shown their true face: three [Western] permanent members of the [UN Security] Council and Ukraine joined them. They blocked it [the draft] as we expected. They don't know what they want and it's impossible to please them," Churkin said on Wednesday.

He added that he "had no idea" why the draft was blocked.

Earlier, Russia circulated in the UN Security Council a draft statement on the necessity to separate moderate opposition from terrorists in Syria, in the light of the halting the airstrikes by the Russian and Syrian forces in Aleppo area.

On Monday, Russia announced the humanitarian pause in Aleppo from 08:00 to 16:00 local time on October 20, halting its airstrikes so that civilians could escape the besieged rebel-held eastern districts of Aleppo and aid convoys could safely get through to those who remain there.

On Tuesday, Vitaly Churkin said that a longer ceasefire in the city of Aleppo was possible, but it has to be agreed on multilaterally.
