WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US government should explain to Americans its practice of seeking user data from internet companies via national security orders, the technology company Yahoo said in a statement on Wednesday.
"Yahoo is formally urging that the US government provide its citizens with clarification around national security orders they issue to internet companies to obtain user data," the release stated.
Yahoo added it trusts "the US government recognizes the importance of clarifying the record in this case."
The company said in Wednesday’s release that its request for clarification intends to set a "stronger precedent of transparency" for its users as well as others who can be affected by the government’s requests.
On Friday, members of the US Congress demanded a briefing from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice on the reported Yahoo email surveillance of users.
