Gerard Larcher, the president of the French Senate, thanked Russia on Thursday for agreeing a humanitarian pause in the stricken Syrian city of Aleppo, at a meeting his Russian counterpart in Bern.

BERN (Sputnik) — An 11-hour pause in Syrian and Russian airstrikes came into effect in Aleppo earlier today. The senior adviser to UN special envoy for Syria, Jan Egeland, said Russia was willing to repeat them every day until Monday.

"I would like to thank you for this truly humanitarian idea," Larcher told Russian upper-house speaker Valentina Matviyenko on the margins of the Association of European Senates meeting in Switzerland.
