The incident occurred on September 12 when the student, Montravious Thomas, was walking to the main office from his classroom to call his mother for a ride home. Thomas, who was expelled from his previous school for behavioral problems and enrolled in Muscogee County’s AIM alternative school program, was then confronted by behavioral specialist Bryant Mosely.
Mosely stopped Thomas for reasons that are unclear, and Thomas claims he was "thrown to the floor" at least three times to prevent him from leaving.
A resource officer noticed the teen walking with a limp but did not file a report, and when Thomas complained of numbness in his leg, the school said they would call an ambulance, but never did. Mosley carried Thomas to the school bus and did not notify his family of his injuries or complaints of pain. He was later airlifted to Columbus Midtown Medical Center.
Renee Tucker, family attorney said, "They placed an injured student on the school bus…We don’t know the extent that the injuries were worsened by the failure to render aid and certainly by picking him up and seating him on the school bus. Then they had him ride in that same school bus home without any support or stabilization of that leg," according to the Ledger Enquirer. Tucker has notified the school district that the family intends to level a $5 million lawsuit.
After further complications, Thomas was informed this weekend that his leg would have to be amputated. Tucker has submitted open records requests for district rules, personnel records and surveillance video footage of the day in question. She has yet to receive these materials.
Reginald Griffin, Edgewood Student Services Center coordinator responded to Thomas’ amputation in an email saying, "We extend our thoughts and prayers to our student who is undergoing medical treatment and to his family…We are committed to conducting a thorough review of the alleged incident at the AIM Student Services Center to determine all of the facts."
Mosley is no longer employed by the Muscogee County School District.
