WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump vowed in the third and final debate with Democratic rival Hillary Clinton to terminate the North American Free Trade Agreement if he is unable to renegotiate it into a better deal.
"I am going to renegotiate NAFTA. And if I can’t make a great deal, then we are going to terminate NAFTA, and we are going to create new deals," Trump stated on Wednesday night.
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s husband, former US president Bill Clinton, signed the North American Free-Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1993. Opponents say that NAFTA, which came into force in 1994, has cost the United States millions of jobs and has decimated the US economic infrastructure.
NAFTA is an agreement signed by Canada, Mexico and the United States, creating a trilateral trade bloc in North America.
Trump has repeatedly criticized NAFTA, introduced by former President Bill Clinton, for decimating US jobs and industries.
