BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — According to Libre Belgique newspaper, the region's stance regarding the trade deal was made clear once again at about 9 p.m. local time (19:00 GMT) on Thursday ahead of the Friday deadline set by the commission.
The European Council failed to approve CETA due to Wallonia's demarche on Tuesday.
CETA aims to establish a free trade zone between Canada and the European Union, scrapping more than 98 percent of the existing tariffs between Ottawa and Brussels. Opponents fear the agreement would undermine standards and regulations on environmental protection, health, safety and workers' rights.
