Across the UK, rural communities have been celebrating the 27th annual Apple Day, held to value the centuries old importance of apples and orchards to British culture.

Fresh food enthusiasts across the UK have been indulging in the best of autumn on Friday: drinking apple cider and juice, playing the traditional game of apple bobbing and eating freshly baked apple pies.

The family friendly day out was initiated by the rural pressure group Common Ground in 1990, to highlight the strong connections that communities have with the landscape that surrounds them.

But more than just a fruity fiesta, apples have been surprisingly iconic in popular culture across the world and throughout the ages.
