Hundreds of people gathered on Saturday in London to express their protest against bombardment of the northern Syrian city of Aleppo demanding to protect its civilians, local media reported.

LONDON (Sputnik) – The demonstration took place outside Downing Street with activists laying teddy bears, wearing “Save Aleppo” T-shirts and carrying placards calling for establishment of a “no-bomb zone now” in Aleppo, The Guardian reported. Some of the protesters reportedly waved Syrian flags.

Members of the demonstration supported by several human right groups including the Amnesty International were accompanied by famous British actress Carey Mulligan, who described the rally as an opportunity to “stand up and say that we need to do something real”.

ICRC Hopes to Use Humanitarian Pause in Aleppo to Evacuate Injured People
Protesters delivered a letter to UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s office demanding to take action to put an end to violence in Aleppo.

The ongoing conflict in Syria has lasted for about five years. Since its beginning it has claimed lives of thousands of people and displaced millions more. The international community has undertaken steps to end the Syrian conflict and to solve the humanitarian crisis in the Middle Eastern country.

On September 9, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry unveiled a peace plan to address the conflict. The ceasefire deal was later shattered by numerous violations, which resulted in intensified fighting between the Syrian government and militants in Aleppo. The Syrian government has announced an end to the ceasefire regime, while Russia said that the United States failed to fulfill its obligation to separate terrorist groups from moderate opposition.
