Instead, she published the following text: "Great quote from Hitler in the video," and, "Please listen to it closely. His words are profound! Let’s start using discernment." Mast later took the post down and explained that she "was not in any way agreeing with Hitler’s words," but trying to prove that Planned Parenthood used "the same tactics and deception used by Hitler regarding innocent lives…I was making a connection between the ideology he used and the arguments made by Planned Parenthood," according to the Wichita Eagle.
Mast received backlash before she realized her mistake and removed the post. Rabbi Moti Rieber, executive director of Kansas Interfaith Action, said "There’s nothing profound, and there’s no room in American politics for the words or thought of Adolph Hitler."
The Republican Speaker later posted an article from Christian blog JulieRoys.com, featuring video and an accompanying transcript of Gianna Jensen, an anti-abortion activist, testifying before Congress.
The transcript documents Jensen using the following quote: "The receptivity of the masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan. – Adolf Hitler"
The head of Great Plains Planned Parenthood, Laura McQuade, pointed out the long-term benefits of the many free services offered by the reproductive health center, and said that she and the organization "condemn Representative Peggy Mast’s offensive remarks."
