Washington Was 'Aware Libya Would Balkanize' After the Fall of Gaddafi
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Western countries attack the states that have a good relationship with Russia, said Gaddaf Al-Dam, the cousin of Libyan revolutionary and politician Muammar Gaddafi killed five years ago by the opposition group.

"Now that we see them [Western countries] destroy Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen, plot against Algeria, we understand that they do it because all these countries had good relations with Russia. And these countries, unlike others, weak ones, can show resistance," Gaddaf Al-Dam said in an interview to RT.

He also said that Libya should demand the UN investigation of the 2011 uprisings in Libya, which culminated in the death of Gaddafi and led to Libya descending into chaos.

"We personally blame what happened in Libya on the Western countries…. We urge the UN to begin the investigation, to apologize to our nation and correct the mistakes made and admitted by these countries," Gaddaf Al-Dam said.

He added that the West opposed Gaddafi's projects for the unification of the African continent, which included joint government, ministries, pooling the resources.

In April, outgoing US President Barack Obama called the lack of planning for the aftermath of the coup in Libya his "worst mistake".

Muammar Gaddafi was killed on October 20, 2011, along with his son Mutasim, following mass protests that erupted in Libya in mid-February and later grew into an armed confrontation between government forces and the opposition.

In December, Libya’s rival governments — the Council of Deputies based in Tobruk and the Tripoli-based General National Congress — agreed to create the GNA, to form the Presidency Council and to end the political impasse.
