VILNIUS (Sputnik) – Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (SDP) will probably lose its standing in the parliament after the second tour of the parliamentary elections, Lithuanian Prime Minister and Head of the SDP Algirdas Butkevicius said Sunday.
"The probability of our moving to the opposition is at 70 percent," Butkevicius told journalists.
The SDP leader added that the reason for his party's poor performance was insufficient campaigning and admitted that he saw the party's third place in the first round of elections partially as a defeat.
After the first round the elections, Homeland Union — Lithuanian Christian Democrats party was leading with with 42 candidates in the second round and the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union was in the second place with 40 candidates, whereas the SDP had only 21.
In the previous parliamentary elections in 2012, the SDP won 38 seats and was able to form coalition with three other parties, propelling Butkevicius to the prime minister position.
