ANKARA (Sputnik) — The project of the new constitution and the presidential system is ready to be sent to parliament, Binali Yildirim, Prime Minister of Turkey and the leader of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) said Sunday.
"We have finished our work on the new Constitution and the presidential system. We are going to submit out draft for parliamentary approval as soon as possible," Yildirim said at the meeting with AKP activists.
Turkish parliament can pass the bill by the constitutional majority of 367 or move it to referendum if more than 330 members of the parliament vote for it.
AKP has 316 seats in the parliament out of 550, and the Nationalist Action Party, whose leader Devlet Bahceli has spoken in favor of the reform, has 40 seats.
The other two parties, the Republican People's Party and The Peoples' Democratic Party, oppose the replacement of the parliamentary republic by the presidential system.
