US Launches Cyber Movement to Fight Islamist Extremism Online - State Dep't

The US government is setting up a new a new movement to encourage moderates across the Middle East and North Africa to create online propaganda to counter Islamic extremism and encourage alternatives, the US Department of State said in a media note on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The program consists of workshops run by regional experts assisting participants in developing concepts for online content. The first workshop took place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on October 24-25, the note added.

"The Department of State is pleased to announce the launch of ‘Creative Minds or Social Good,’ a new public-private initiative to increase the capacity of private voices in the Middle East and North Africa," the note stated.

The movement’s participants will create and disseminate online content to refute Islamic terrorist propaganda and promote positive alternatives in the region, according to the note.

"The State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs is conducting this program in partnership with Facebook and the Hedayah International Center of Excellence for Countering Violent Extremism," the note explained.
